Chakra Work: pt 1 - Base Chakra

Base (or Root) Chakra

The base chakra is one of the chakras that MOST people need some work on.  As you might expect, it is located at the base of our spine and it's color is bright red.  When you meditate you will focus your attention toward the area between the genitals and anus.

The reason this chakra often needs work is because it is the chakra center that houses our FEAR.  It links us with the physical world. Many people of the Indian religions believe that the base chakra connects us to mother earth through an invisible cord. Often it is described as "giving us roots into the soil".

Our Root chakra is the one concerned with giving us a feeling of security and concerns with survival. It is from this chakra that we feel connected with the laws of nature. We sense our part in the cycle of life (as well as the cycle of the year) through this chakra.

Ask Yourself:  Have you ever noticed that when you focus on nature, you feel more secure in the world?  When you let go of your fear, do you find your lower body feels lighter somehow?

MEDITATION:

First, it is best to do chakra work and meditation on an empty stomache (a little water is fine). Doing this first thing in the morning or right before a meal might be a good way to accomplish that. Just be sure you are not STARVING. The idea is for your body to not be churning away in its digestion, and yet not cramping and growling for food. You want to avoid extremes.  Avoiding extremes is the Ayur Veda way of life, as is a focus on balance (my study in energy work began with Ayur Veda, but of course there are other disciplines from which to begin and/or focus)  Chakra work and meditation is a good way to begin bringing more balance back into your life.

Start by finding a quiet spot and getting comfortable.  Sitting upright with a straight back is preferred, but you need not try to cross your legs uncomfortably.  I find that sitting in a comfortable chair works well. Just try to keep your back straight (but not tense) so that the chakras can be opened without resistance.

Take a few deep breaths. I like to take 3 - 1 for body, 1 for mind, and 1 for spirit.  Relax your whole body, starting at your head and working your way down. Imagine each muscle group relaxing as you go down. When you get to the very bottom, visualize roots coming down from your spine, through your feet and into the earth. This will ground you and allow you to tap into energy that mother earth has for you.  For those who are in the goddess traditions, imagine that the goddess has blessed the earth you are tapping into (for she has!). Your roots are connecting to her very womb, from which so much bounty is available for you.

Take a moment to surround yourself with a protective bubble of white light. Say softly but firmly "Only love and light may enter herein. The goddess protect me and guide me in this meditation".

When you are fully relaxed, focus your attention on your bottom. Imagine a bright red, glowing and swirling ball of light.  It may take you a while to find it within yourself, and if you are not able to see the colors right away, that's ok. It will come with practice.

Once you find the swirling ball of energy at the bottom of your spine, make it swirl!  Start it spinning faster (in reality, it is always spinning although it may not seem like it).  Once you get it spinning, think for a few moments about the things in your life that you FEAR.  Begin to see these things IN that chakra center.  See the red light swirl around them and through them.  Begin to let go of those things that you fear. Realize that the Universe has infinite amounts of energy at your disposal that you can use to find solutions to the things you fear.  Realize that you can transmute that fear and turn it into a call to be challenged.  Realize that the things you fear can only hurt you if you let them.  Challenge yourself to find solutions that will help you control your fears.

Visualize yourself sprinkling water into your base chakra. See the sprinkles of water swirl around with the red and cleanse yourself of your fears.  When you are ready, see the light from the chakra grow brighter and larger. See it reach outside of yourself. Notice that the beams of red light get so long that they reach out into the Universe.  Now, watch your fears begin to dissipate as they travel up the beams of light. They will go out into the Universe. Since energy can be neither created nor destroyed, they will be absorbed into the Universal energy field and be recycled.

Envision the Goddess (if that is your path) sending you new energy from the earth.  See her helping to strengthen your connection to the earth and all of nature.  Watch her braid your red beams and tie them beautifully around the trees, animals, plants...everything around where you live.  Watch all of nature smile and sigh in relief - for they have missed your connection for quite some time.  Know that whenever you walk through woods, on a beach, or anywhere in nature, a part of your energy now connects you to all you see.  You will be able to draw upon that connection to help strengthen you against your fears, as well as to constantly keep your connection to nature healthy, happy and strong.

When all of your fears have dissipated into the Universe, and when you feel you have replenished your root chakra with energy the Goddess provided from the earth, begin to bring your red beams back into your body.  Keep the chakra spinning. Realize that it is now cleansed and spinning happily. Bring your attention back into the room. Thank the Goddess for her protection and assistance. Stand up slowly and get on with your day. Notice that you feel a stronger connection to all around you and that your bottom feels lighter. Your cares should be lessoned and your ability to draw joy from nature will come much easier for you today!
