Today we dropped all of our lesson work and headed for the hills...Speck Mountain, to be exact. We have had this spot on our bucket list for some time as my husband used to swim there a lot in his childhood. It's a really lovely drive up a respectably-sized mountain where you will then find waterfalls, bubbling creeks, and natural "water slides" made from rocks that have been smoothed over time. We really had a great time!
I just *had* to include a pic of this rain tree, as it really reminded me of some depictions I've seen of the roots of Yggdrasil, the Norse world tree.

This week marked the half-way point to DS8's math curriculum (Math U See). I have been digitally scanning the chapter worksheet pages (for later use, or in case he wants to redo a page for a refresher, etc) before we work on them, and I had only done up to the halfway mark. I sat down with DS8 and we chatted about some of the things he liked about the curriculum and things he might like to change about it. Then we peeked online at a few other options for math that we have dabbled with, to see if he thought he might prefer to change to doing something else more completely. After he spent some time poking around and exploring, he came back to me and let me know that he was still very happy with Math U See, and would still like that to be his main source for math each week. He also said he'd still like to supplement (or break it up a bit) with Prodigy math as well as www.turtlediary.com.
So, since he made the choice to keep going with it, I'll be scanning several more chapters of Math U See this week while he takes a bit of a break from it, and then we'll jump back in next week.
This is the beauty of having a cooperative stance towards home educating. We often sit and chat about what DS8's goals are, and what he will need to achieve those goals. He wants to be able to go to college one day if he so chooses, and so he recognizes the importance of staying on
a college-preparatory path. What better way to allow him to follow his passions
than to help him be prepared?
