Grade 6 Geology

Finished Product: The Rock Cycle

One thing I really love about homeschooling is that a younger child can be included in a lesson "above their grade" (tm). Lessons are always more fun with another child! We read the book Magic Schoolbus Blows Its Top along with a youtube video on the rock cycle.

The vocabulary and concepts were a bit above my 3rd grader's comprehension, but she still enjoyed the lesson and emerged with a general understanding of how the rock cycle works. My 6th grader was able to grasp the information and learn the new vocabulary. He was challenged by the worksheet, but not overly confused or frustrated (which is the ideal, in my opinion!).
I allowed my 3rd grader to "copy" the answers from her brother's paper. My theory is that it might be above her understanding right now, but some things might filter in via exposure.  Besides, she loved coloring in her volcano and making explosion sound effects at the same time!

Below is a blank version of the worksheet we colored and filled in (found via google search).

Don't you just love the internet? What a great age we live in, where there is a plethora of free information right at one's fingertips.
