Make Your Own Non-Petroleum Jelly

Here's a recipe for an environmentally friendly NON-petroleum jelly that is great for protecting lips, baby care, help heal scrapes and rashes, gloss and protect your lips, and many other uses **!  Best of all, no offshore drilling leading to deadly oil spills are neccessary for making it.  Makes a great gift!!

4 cups almond* oil (give or take)
1 cup bee wax
15-20 drops grapefruit seed extract (optional)

1. In a double boiler over simmering water and medium heat, combine the oil and beeswax, and heat until the wax has melted. (do not overheat!)

2. Remove mixture from the heat and add the grapefruit seed extract. (or skip if you are not using extract)
3. Beat with a hand mixer until creamy.

Store in glass jars with a screw-top (or canning jelly jars). This jelly will keep for a year.

(For a single jar, use 2 oz oil to 1/2 oz wax and about 8-10 drops extract - will make about a 1/2 cup)

* You may also use olive oil instead of almond oil

  1. great sounding recipe! how long does it last unrefrigerated before spoiling? (i don't use petroleum jelly much, but would like to have this healthier substitute on hand!)

  3. I would say probably about a few weeks or more (with the addition of the bees wax, I think the preservation time will be longer). If in doubt, I guess try the fridge :) Since it's fairly easy to make, maybe just do the smaller sized jar :)

  4. Thanks so much for this. I love making my own stuff...great for home school lessons. We made some rose water a few weeks ago. It is almost ready to strain. I have the directions on my blog.
